Empowering Women, Elevating Community: W.E.I. Brunch Honors Kansas City Leaders
What began as a simple social media initiative has blossomed into a powerful movement uplifting women across Kansas City. Women’s Empowerment Initiative (W.E.I.), founded by Angela Lacy — also known as Chef Ang of VKC — continues to grow as a platform dedicated to honoring, connecting, and advancing women in business, leadership, and influence.
Launched in 2023, W.E.I. started as a digital campaign recognizing 31 women during Women’s Month. The initiative quickly gained traction, sparking collaborations and building a supportive online community centered on visibility and empowerment.
By 2025, the vision expanded beyond the screen. W.E.I. hosted its first in-person brunch experience, creating a space where women could gather, share resources, and form meaningful professional relationships. The event marked a pivotal shift from digital recognition to real-world connection.
In 2026, the initiative reached a new milestone, moving to a larger venue to accommodate its growing audience and impact. This year’s brunch brought together entrepreneurs, influencers, and community leaders for a day of celebration, networking, and inspiration.
“There's something powerful about gathering around a table,” said Lacy. “It’s where ideas are born, wisdom is shared, and genuine connections are made.”
The brunch featured guest speakers and honored outstanding women for their achievements. Among the highlights, Judy Bumpus, Director of Client Services for the Women’s Business Center, received two 2026 W.E.I. Awards recognizing her contributions and leadership — the first for Exceptional Leadership, Service, and Impact in Empowering Entrepreneurs and Strengthening the Business Community Honoree and the second as the Kansas City Women's Business Community Honoree.
“Receiving this honor from W.E.I. is truly humbling,” said Bumpus. I’m so grateful to be recognized among such powerful and inspiring women. The brunch was more than just an event — it was an experience filled with encouragement, connection, and genuine sisterhood. Being in a room with so many talented women reminded me of the importance of community and collaboration. Thank you to W.E.I. for creating a space where women are celebrated, uplifted, and empowered to keep growing and leading.”
At its core, W.E.I. remains rooted in its founding mission: to honor women and create opportunities for growth, collaboration, and community building. With each year, the initiative continues to evolve — planting seeds of inspiration and harvesting a stronger, more connected network of women across Kansas City.
As W.E.I. looks ahead, its message remains clear: when women come together, they don’t just celebrate success — they multiply it.
