At Women’s Employment Network (WEN), we believe that empowering one woman can transform an entire community. At our 2025 Annual Luncheon- Dynamic Duos we celebrated the partnerships—between coaches and clients, and organizations and supporters—that make lasting change possible.

Our keynote speaker, Michelle Young, a proud graduate of WEN, shared a deeply personal and inspiring story of strength. Her journey reflects the impact your support has on women building new futures in Kansas City.

A New Beginning with WEN

In 1993, Michelle was a 17-year-old high school senior—nine months pregnant, with no clear path ahead. She had no job, no car, and very little support. But what she did have was a desire to create a better life.

Then she discovered WEN.

“I came in broken, unsure, and without hope,” Michelle recalled. “But from the moment I arrived, something felt different. I felt seen. I felt heard. And most of all, I wasn’t judged.”

At WEN, Michelle received the tools she needed to succeed: practical job training, resume preparation, interview coaching, and—most importantly—belief in her potential. She left with more than job skills. She left with purpose, confidence, and hope.

A Journey Fueled by Determination—and Community Support

Over the years, Michelle earned a technical certificate, opened and ran a preschool for 16 years, and raised three incredible children. Most recently, she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work—graduating in 2023—and is now making an impact as a School Social Worker, guiding people toward success just as WEN once did for her.

Michelle’s story is proof that when you invest in women, you invest in stronger families, better communities, and a more equitable future. Her journey, like so many others, started with a moment of courage—and a community that believed in her.
